What Is an Electronic Signature? Everything You Need to Know
eimzahemen · 16.10.2026
According to the definition in Electronic Signature Law No. 5070, an electronic signature is electronic data attached to, or logically associated with, other electronic data and used for authentication.
An electronic signature consists of letters, characters or symbols that guarantee information is transmitted in an environment closed to third parties, without its integrity being compromised and with the identities of the parties verified. Unlike a handwritten signature, a person does not have a "single" signature; instead they have mathematical keys used for signing, and the signature differs depending on the signed text.
Three Key Properties of an Electronic Signature
- Data Integrity: Prevents data from being changed, deleted or added to, whether without permission or by mistake.
- Authentication and Approval: Ensures the validity of the message and of its sender.
- Non-repudiation: Prevents individuals from denying transactions they carried out electronically.
Is It Legally Valid?
Yes. Under the Electronic Signature Law, a Secure Electronic Signature is accepted as equivalent to a handwritten signature. Data created with a Secure Electronic Signature has the force of a deed and is considered conclusive evidence until proven otherwise. (Exception: transactions for which the law requires a special formality, such as real estate sales, inheritance or marriage, cannot be carried out with an electronic signature.)
Where Is It Used?
Public sector: national exam applications (ÖSS/KPSS/LES), inter-agency communication, social security and health applications, tax payments.
Commercial use: internet banking, insurance transactions, paperless offices, e-contracts, e-orders.
How Long Is It Valid?
Every electronic certificate has a clear start and end date, usually between 1 and 3 years. You can easily extend an expired certificate with a renewal application.
